Words of Encouragement

What If What You’ve Been Told Isn’t the Full Picture?

What If What You’ve Been Told Isn’t the Full Picture?

There was something I heard recently that made me stop and go back to the Word for myself. It wasn’t even something new, but it made me realise how easy it is to accept something as truth simply because we’ve heard it repeated often enough.

For years, I’ve heard it taught that Moses had a speech problem, and if I’m honest, I had never really questioned it. But when I read it again, I noticed something I hadn’t paid attention to before. In Exodus 4:10, Moses says, “I am slow of speech and tongue.” Yet in Acts of the Apostles 7:22, he is described as someone who was “powerful in speech and action.” Both of those statements are in Scripture, which means the situation may not be as simple as we’ve often made it.

What it showed me is how careful we need to be about turning a moment into a fixed label. It’s very easy to build beliefs from what we’ve heard, rather than from what we’ve actually taken the time to study and understand for ourselves. Over time, those beliefs don’t just sit in the background, they begin to shape how we see ourselves, how we hear God, and what we think is possible for our lives.

When I look at Moses, I don’t just see a man responding to a call. I see someone who, in that moment, questioned his own ability to step into what God was asking of him. And if we’re honest, that can feel very familiar, especially in seasons where we know what God has said, but we’re not fully convinced that we are the right person to carry it.

This is why it matters to read the Word for yourself, not just to hear it or agree with it, but to understand it. Because when you begin to see clearly what God is actually saying, it starts to challenge the things you may have believed without realising it. And if those beliefs go unchecked, they can quietly keep you within limits that were never set by God, only reinforced over time through repetition.

In a waiting season, that becomes even more important, because what you believe will influence how you respond, and how you respond will shape what you step into next.

And it’s worth asking, what has that belief been costing you?

What’s something you’ve believed for years that you’ve never actually gone back to check in the Word?
